NHC HONOURS DR ROBERT SOBUKWE’S LEGACY THROUGH UBUNTU INITIATIVE

The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) celebrated the life and enduring legacy of Dr Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, one of South Africa’s foremost liberation icons, through a special Ubuntu Initiative held in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape. This initiative was hosted during Human Rights month from 26-28 March 2025.The purpose of the Nelson Mandela Ubuntu initiative project is to inculcate the spirit of Ubuntu as part of our living heritage.

This initiative honoured Sobukwe’s unwavering dedication to justice, equality, and the emancipation of Black South Africans. In South Africa, 21 March is observed as Human Rights Day in remembrance of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre—a pivotal moment in the country’s history, led by Dr Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). Sobukwe’s unwavering resistance to apartheid, despite years of imprisonment and enforced isolation, remains a powerful source of inspiration for generations committed to the ongoing fight for social justice and human rights. At the core of Sobukwe’s philosophy was Ubuntu—a foundational African value that embodies compassion, humanity, and collective progress. He exemplified leadership grounded in humility, refusing to compromise his principles even in adversity. In alignment with these ideals, the NHC hosted a community outreach programme in Graaff-Reinet, Sobukwe’s birthplace, aimed at educating young people about Ubuntu and its critical role in nurturing a just and caring society.

The initiative included visiting a local school, Nqweba High School, located in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape Province where learners benefited from engagement sessions on Ubuntu and leadership values. To further support community development, the Council donated essential supplies to learners from the school, reinforcing its commitment to education and promote social upliftment.

Key stakeholders included members of the Robert Sobukwe family, the Robert Sobukwe Foundation, Nqweba High School, members of the Media, and the broader community, participated in this program.

The NHC chairperson, Mr. Tau Masemola raised a key concern during the lecture which was centred on engagement of the youth in preserving Sobukwe’s legacy. “How do we keep this legacy alive when our children are not here? We are talking to ourselves, “Mr. Masemola emphasized, urging action to involve future generations in historical remembrance.

The NHC remains steadfast in its mission to preserve and promote South Africa’s rich heritage, ensuring that Dr Sobukwe’s profound legacy of selflessness, principled leadership, and Ubuntu continues to inspire and guide future generations.
