A focused IKS Seminar to be held with Cape Malay slaves’ descendants and the Khoisan community
The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) in collaboration with the Cape Heritage Museum and the Castle of Good Hope will host a focused Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) Seminar with the Cape Malay slaves’ descendants and Khoisan community to take a lead and determine how their culturally rich heritage is to be preserved and promoted. The seminar will be held under theme: Cultural Heritage as a Resource to achieve social cohesion, national building, national identity and social transformation.
This focused discussion is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the different approaches being used to manage the heritage of the Cape Malay slaves’ descendants and Khoisan community post 30 years of democracy; examine how the cultures of both communities can further be supported to continue to grow amongst the liveliest and most definitive oldest cultures exclusive to South Africa.
The United Nations’ 2003 Convention of intangible cultural heritage emphasises that the management of heritage should be done with the widest consultation, especially with the custodians and bearers of the particular element that is being focused on.
The following topics will form part of the Seminar; Cultural Heritage and Diversity; National Identity and Heritage transformation assessment.
The panelists will include representatives from the Khoisan and Cape Malay slaves’ descendants and Government entities’ representatives.
