NHC Mourns the Passing of National Living Treasure, Mr. Mackson Mavunda

The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Mackson Mavunda, who was recently honoured as a National Living Treasure at the Golden Shield Heritage Awards (GOSHA) 2025, held in Mpumalanga.

Mr. Mavunda dedicated over four decades to the preservation and promotion of Vatsonga cultural heritage through traditional dance, music, and mentorship. His passion for cultural education and youth development has left an indelible mark on the heritage landscape of South Africa.

He founded the Mahatlani Dance Group in 1980, which later became part of the Gazankulu Youth Movement, and in 1990 established the Caravan Traditional Dance Group, championing Xigubu and Mchongolo dance forms. In recent years, he continued his mission through the African Indigenous Instrument Preservation NPC, training young people in the art of traditional music and performance.

His recognition as a National Living Treasure celebrated his tireless work in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage — from dance and music to oral storytelling and community mentorship.

“Mr. Mavunda represented the very essence of what it means to be a Living Treasure — a guardian of tradition, a teacher to the youth, and a living archive of our collective identity,”
said Dr. Thabo Manetsi, Chief Executive Officer of the National Heritage Council.

The NHC extends heartfelt condolences to the Mavunda family, his colleagues, and the entire heritage community. Further details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated once confirmed.

May his legacy of cultural pride and preservation continue to inspire generations to come.
