The National Heritage Council (NHC) of South Africa and the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Limpopo Heritage Resources Agency (LIHRA), Baphalaborwa Municipality and Mopani District to host a celebration ritual and traditional festival called “Ku luma vukanyi” in Xitsonga or “Go loma morula” in Sepedi, to mark the beginning of the Marula season in South Africa.
The two-day event will start with the traditional ritual performed by only selected Traditional Doctors, Traditional Leaders and Senior community members on 18 February 2022. It will be followed by an official ceremony, tasting festival and cultural performances on 19 February 2022.
Day 1: 18 February (16h00 – 18h00)
Venue: Muti Wa Vatsonga Open-Air Museum, Hans Marensky Nature Reserve, Limpopo
Day 2: 19 February 2022 (11h00-17h00)
Venue: Thakgalang Village, Ga-Kgoshi Pheeha, Morebeng (formerly Soekmekaar), next to
Tribal Authority Offices, Limpopo
Attendance: 500 people from different villages and constituencies
Guests of honour: MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture in Limpopo, Chairperson of the NHC Board, CEO of the NHC, Chairperson of LIHRA, Mayors of the hosting municipalities, the hosting Traditional Leader, Traditional Healers.
