SA’s heritage community mourns the passing of Mama Sobukwe

The passing of the freedom struggle stalwart, Mama Zondeni Sobukwe, on Wednesday, 15 August 2018 has shaken many who were still wishing for her experience of the struggle to be recorded. She was the only remaining woman struggle veteran of her generation who contributed directly to the Sobukwe legacy and Pan-Africanism.  The National Heritage Council (NHC) of South Africa is saddened by her departure.

“We are grateful as the NHC, to have benefitted from Mam’ Sobukwe regarding her experience of the freedom struggle alongside her husband Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. She was supportive to the initiative of the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route as a project that will ensure that the history of the struggle becomes part of our country’s heritage,” says Sonwabile Mancotywa, the CEO of the NHC.

The NHC passes its sincere sympathies to the family and comrades who feel the pain of losing a woman “Mother of Azania” whose presence will be dearly missed.
