Applications are invited from the following:

  • Educational institutions participating in heritage projects * Non-profit Companies (NPCs) * Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) * Community based Organisations (CBOs) * Associations * Individuals who are involved in heritage projects/programmes- and must be willing to partner with qualifying institutions for their project implementation and financial reporting * Foundations * Trusts.

NB: Organisations that qualify for funding but do not have the necessary compliant requirements must be willing to be administered or partner with credible organisations or
institutions (excluding these business formations: close corporations, (Pty) Ltd, Section 21 for gain organisations and cooperatives) for purposes of financial reporting (audited financial statements) and capacity building. (A partnership agreement that defines roles of the partners should be submitted with the application.

  • Employees of the National Heritage Council and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for funding with the NHC
  • Government agencies receiving funds from the Department of Arts & Culture

1.     Funded Initiatives:

Projects must have been initiated in South Africa and support the National Heritage Council Strategic Initiatives with preference given to projects that respond to the government’s national imperatives and be heritage focused guided by the following  principles: education and awareness; poverty alleviation; nation building; transfer of skills; capacity building, sustainable impact projects; equity and redress of historic imbalances and creation of partnerships. Special attention will be given to the following categories:

a) Heritage Research & publication; Liberation Heritage; Khoi & San Communities and Education & Heritage.

NB:  1) No faxed or emailed application forms will be accepted.

        2) Only one (1) application per organisation will be accepted.

Applications received without the following documents will not be considered:

a)    NHC application form

b) Completed declaration forms (SBD4 and SBD8)

c) Your company/organisation registration certificate/Trust Deed

d)   Your current Tax Clearance Certificate  valid for at least six (6) months (original copy)

e) Latest financial statements for new organisations accompanied by a commitment letter
from their audit firm/registered accountant and in the case of organisations that are registered for more than one year audited financial statements.

f) Certified identity documents of authorised persons.

g) A detailed Business plan with itemised budget  and a project plan


How will you know if your proposal was successful

Successful applications will be contacted directly and published on the NHC website and
annual report after contractual agreements are concluded.  Should applicants not hear from the NHC within 60 days after the closing date, they should consider their application

NB: Successful applicants will be subjected to verification prior to official notification

Funding ceiling

Projects with national impact may apply for funds up to a maximum of R1m

Closing date: (Friday) 31st January 2014 at 13h00.  Late applications will not be considered.

The National Heritage Council reserves the right to award
or not to award funding.
