Dr Boutros Boutros-Ghali was announced yesterday as the recipient of the 2009 international Ubuntu Honour following Nelson Mandela (2006 in the Mpumalanga Province), Dr Kenneth Kaunda (2007 in the Western Cape Province) and Fidel Castro (2008 in Limpopo Province). Dr Boutros-Ghali is a respected African who embodies the true living values of Ubuntu. He will receive the honour alongside the late King Sabata Dalindyebo on the 1st October 2009 in the Eastern Cape Province, Bumbane Royal Residence just outside Mthatha.
The prestigious Ubuntu Award was also unveiled by the CEO of the National Heritage Council, Sonwabile Mancotywa and the Deputy Head of Mission from the Egyptian Embassy, Counsellor Mohammed Heider. The MEC for Education, Mr Qwase, the Executive Mayor of King Danlindyebo Municipality, Cllr Mlamli and the representative of the Bumbane Royal House, Mr Mpahlana accepted the nomination to receive the award and host this year’s Ubuntu activities in the Eastern Cape Province as part of the heritage month programme.
The Ubuntu Campaign is hosted by a different province each year to restore the positive values of humanity as part of the people’s African heritage. A series of activities will be held during the heritage month leading to the festive cultural celebration on the 1st of October. Dr Boutros-Ghali will also deliver a public lecture at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha and at WITS in Johannesburg on the 1st and 2nd of October 2009 respectively.
