Free State province takes first place at the Heritage Education national camp
The 2021 National Heritage Education School Outreach Programme (HESOP) and national camp took place from 04 October 2021 to 08 October 2021 in the Limpopo Province, Marakele National Park. Learners from the 8 provinces were presented at this year’s national camp, with Selelekela Secondary School from Free State claimed first place; Zanempucuko Secondary School from Eastern Cape taking second place and lastly third place winner, Sitintile Secondary School from Mpumalanga.
The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC), in partnership with the South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Basic Education Department, have been hosting the Heritage Education School Outreach Programme since its inception. Brand South Africa and South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) have been stakeholder partners for the past three years and have since supported the programme with passion and dedication to shape a youth proud and aware of its rich and diverse heritage.
The programme is presented in a competition format and runs from district and provincial levels, to the culmination of the national event. At this year’s national camp 8 provinces were represented by 32 learners in groups of four. The learners went through rigorous competition and assessed based on their research skills and content, listening and presentation skills by experienced adjudicators from the Heritage sector. Winners from second and third place walk away with educational prizes for their victory which includes tablets and first place winners win laptops and board games.
Learners were given the following topics as part of their research and presentation at the camp:
• 150 years later and 27 years into democracy, do you think women’s positions and roles have changed and why?
• Many gender activists blame culture for oppression of women, in your own view explain how culture could be used to changed women’s positions to society and also address some of the social ills like GBV&F, etc.
• Identify intangible heritage forms, skills and techniques within your community. State its origin, background and significance, indicate whether Its under threat and finally indicate how could it be preserved and promoted.
• Briefly explain how African traditional food production and preservation could play a role in addressing food insecurity and social injustices?
Winners walk away with educational prizes including board games, laptops and tablets.
With the mission to transform, protect and promote South African heritage for sustainable development, focusing more on the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the programme continues to be one of the main strategic platforms available where learners engage in experiential learning on the many facets of national heritage. HESOP compliments the current curriculum in terms of the Heritage subject area and is open to learners from Grades 8 to 11 as a means to orientate them on the various career paths and potential funders of the different professions and scholarships in heritage programme.
