GOLDEN SHIELD HERITAGE AWARDS
Call for nominations

The National Heritage Council (NHC) of South Africa wishes to honour champions who work selflessly to make the country proud of its African heritage. You are invited to nominate people or organisations that do excellent work in the heritage sector. Winners will be selected from public nominations by an adjudication committee and awarded on 18 September 2015 in Gauteng.
The objective of the awards is to recognise the contribution of individuals, groups, or organisations/academic institutions towards preserving South African heritage. The award recipients and the projects that reflect best practice in promotion, preservation, conservation and/or interpretation of our heritage will be considered.

These are the categories
National Living Treasure
An elder above 50 years of age involved in heritage.
Local Government Commitment
A municipality that has made outstanding contributions to local, regional or provincial heritage.
Preferred Heritage Destination
A heritage site, museum, leisure facility, interpretation centre, etc. that offers visitors an exceptional experience of heritage and history of South Africa.
Young Heritage Activist
A young person under 35 year of age who is passionately contributing to heritage awareness.
Heritage Ambassador
Persons between 35 and 50 years of age or organisations that have achieved remarkable milestones in promoting, protecting, preserving and/or conserving South African heritage in the democratic era.
Academic Excellence
An academic institution that has initiatives / programmes that promote knowledge production in heritage.
Favourite World Heritage Site
The nominators and nominees will choose one of their favourite sites from a list of 8 World Heritage Sites.
The three categories below are not for public nomination
Outstanding Community Project
The NHC will select one of its well-executed beneficiary projects from a list of those who were funded in the past.
Heritage Leadership
The NHC will select a person, people or institution based on the relevant discourse and occurrences at the time.
World Heritage Site of the Year
The best site from the only 8 in South Africa will be chosen by an independent panel.
