It was one of the greatest moments on the evening of 10th September 2014 for the National Heritage Council as a whole, from its council members and staff members. With the country celebrating 20 years of democracy, the council concurrently celebrates its greatest strides it has achieved in the 10 years of its existence.

‘Critical Conversations about Heritage’ is a book launched at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton by the CEO of the National Heritage Council, Adv. Sonwabile Mancotywa.

South African Actress, TV personality Florence Masebe encouraged invited guests to go back to the tradition of ululating and not the western way of clapping hands. Adv. Mancotywa was very proud to have had a book written with his name attached to it. He thanked Mr Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation for affording the Council the opportunity to use the facility in celebrating the legacy of Tata Nelson Mandela during the Heritage month.

“The aim of this quick-read book is to get South Africans to read about their heritage and debate around contemporary issues documented in the book”, said Adv. Mancotywa.

MEC of Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi; Council members of the NHC; well-respected Prof. Mongane Wali Serote; Embassies of Russia and China were at the book launch. Panyaza Lesufi said that he is humbled by the content in the book and that it’s important that our children understand where we come from as a nation and how we got to where we are today. He confidently said that he will ensure in his capacity that the book is distributed into all libraries in all 1600 schools around the country for heritage to be mainstreamed in South Africa’s education framework

Adv. Mancotywa urged the youth in the auditorium to pledge to read the book and share with their peers so they get to converse around issues of heritage. He relished his moment of glory, by signing each and every book given to the guests.
